Water supply problems disrupt services at Kalafong Hospital

The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital is experiencing low water pressure following repairs to a burst pipe near a railway station in Pretoria West.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the department said the water supply challenge has affected operations at the hospital since Saturday.

According to the department, several sections of the hospital have been impacted, including outpatient department clinics, human resources offices, the casualty section and the resuscitation unit.

Despite the disruptions, officials said critical healthcare services remain operational. These include maternity services, operating theatres, wards, the mortuary, food services and the facility management unit.

The department said the hospital has contingency measures in place to ensure continuity of essential services. These include water storage facilities capable of supplying the hospital for between two and four days, supported by two boreholes, four sectional tanks and a reservoir.

Hospital management has also begun rescheduling outpatient appointments in affected clinics.

Members of the public seeking non-emergency medical treatment have been advised to use alternative healthcare facilities until water pressure at the hospital stabilises. The Gauteng Department of Health has apologised to patients and residents for the inconvenience caused by the service interruption.
