JCPS ministers hold urgent talks as illegal immigration protests escalate

Government’s security cluster ministers are convening an urgent meeting to address escalating protests over illegal immigration and the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa.

The high-level meeting, held at the Union Buildings in Tshwane, brings together ministers within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster, along with senior national security officials, amid growing tensions and community demonstrations in several parts of the country.

According to the JCPS Cluster, the discussions will focus on the increasing protests linked to immigration concerns, as well as broader issues relating to social cohesion and national stability.

Ministers are also expected to finalise a framework for a national action plan aimed at combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

The government said the plan seeks to address the wider societal impact of illegal immigration while balancing constitutional rights and social harmony.

Later in the day, the ministers will engage with political parties, civic organisations, associations and protest groups that have been involved in marches and demonstrations against illegal foreign nationals across the country.

The engagements are expected to focus on establishing clear rules governing protests and public demonstrations, while also outlining government’s current interventions and long-term strategies to deal with illegal immigration.

The urgent meeting comes as anti-illegal immigration protests continue to gain momentum in parts of the country, with some communities demanding stricter border control measures, intensified law enforcement operations and the deportation of undocumented immigrants.Government has repeatedly warned against acts of xenophobia and vigilantism, urging communities to raise concerns through lawful and constitutional channels.
