Political party chief whip arrested on fraud charges

A 46-year-old chief whip of a well-known political party has been arrested in the Western Cape on allegations of fraud involving more than R233 000.

The suspect was served with a warrant of arrest on Thursday, 28 May 2026, in connection with allegations that she fraudulently solicited money from party employees under false pretences.

According to authorities, the alleged offences took place between August and December 2024, when the accused reportedly recruited four individuals into the party as researchers.

It is alleged that after employing the individuals, the suspect demanded that they hand over between 50% and 60% of their salaries, claiming the money was needed to cover the legal costs of the president of the same political party.

Investigators allege that the payments were made under pressure and that the victims collectively lost approximately R233 317.99.

The suspect is expected to make her first appearance in the Cape Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Police investigations into the matter are continuing.
