Free return Gautrain trips announced for Soweto Derby fans

Johannesburg: Soccer supporters heading to this weekend’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby can expect a smoother and more affordable matchday commute, following a special transport announcement by Gauteng authorities.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has unveiled a travel plan offering fans a free return journey on the Gautrain when they pay for a one-way trip to Park Station.

The initiative is aimed at easing congestion and enhancing the overall experience for thousands of supporters expected to attend the clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Sunday, 26 April 2026.

The Soweto Derby consistently draws massive crowds and remains one of the most fiercely contested fixtures in local football, making efficient transport planning a key priority for organisers.

“This is about making the derby experience seamless from start to finish,” said Diale-Tlabela. “Transport can make or break an event of this magnitude. We are ensuring fans get to the game safely, efficiently, and without the frustration of traffic congestion,” she added.

Under the plan, fans will take the Gautrain to Park Station, where dedicated shuttle buses will transport them directly to the stadium. The shuttle service, free for valid match ticket holders, will also return them to the station after the game.

Commuters will receive a special Gautrain armband at Park Station, which covers access to the shuttle buses, a complimentary return train trip, and free parking at Gautrain stations.

Bus services from Park Station will begin at 09:00, while stadium gates are scheduled to open at 10:00. After the match, return buses will operate from FNB Stadium to Park Station, with the last departure set for 19:00.

The MEC is encouraging fans to take advantage of the offer to avoid heavy traffic and parking challenges typically associated with one of South Africa’s biggest sporting events.
