Fraud and corruption case against crime intelligence head postponed to September

The case against Dumisani Khumalo and six co-accused has been postponed to 3 September 2026 by the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court pending the outcome of representations submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority.

Lieutenant-General Khumalo, who heads the Crime Intelligence Division of the South African Police Service, is facing charges of fraud and corruption alongside six other accused.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Khumalo and five co-accused submitted representations to the office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions shortly before the matter was scheduled to be transferred to a higher court for trial.

The charges relate to the alleged appointment of an unqualified civilian within the SAPS Crime Intelligence Division.

Prosecutors allege that the appointment process involved fraudulent and corrupt activities linked to senior officials within the division.

The NPA confirmed that investigations into the matter have been completed and that IDAC is ready to proceed with the prosecution once the process involving representations has been finalised.

The postponement means the matter will remain before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court until a decision is made on the representations submitted by the accused.

The case forms part of broader efforts by law enforcement authorities and anti-corruption prosecutors to address alleged misconduct and corruption within senior SAPS structures.
