Johannesburg: Traffic disruptions and heightened tensions gripped parts of Soweto on Saturday morning after a protest at Diepkloof Hostel spilled onto major routes, forcing the closure of key highways and prompting a heavy law enforcement response.
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), protesters barricaded sections of the N12 East and N1 North at the Diepkloof Interchange, as well as Chris Hani Road, using burning tyres and debris.
Reports indicate that the protest action is linked to residents going days without electricity.
JMPD has confirmed that two trucks were looted during the early morning unrest, adding to concerns about safety and property damage in the area.
Law enforcement officers, including units from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Public Order Policing division, were deployed to the scene and have since managed to push protesters back into the vicinity of Diepkloof Hostel.
Despite this, officials warned that the situation remains volatile.
“Officers are maintaining a strong presence in the area to ensure the safety of motorists and to prevent further property damage,” said Xolani Fihla, JMPD spokesperson
Drivers are advised to avoid the affected routes where possible and instead make use of alternative roads such as the Golden Highway and Rand Show Road.
“The JMPD will continue to monitor the situation closely until it is fully under control and all affected roads are deemed safe for public use,” Fihla added.
No injuries have been officially reported at this stage, but authorities remain on high alert as they work to prevent further escalation.
