SANBS Marks 25 Years of Saving Lives

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is celebrating 25 years of service to the nation, marking a milestone that highlights its critical role in saving lives and supporting the country’s healthcare system.

Established in 2001 through the merger of six regional blood services, the SANBS has grown into a key pillar of public health, now providing a safe and reliable blood supply to patients in eight of country’s nine provinces.

Over the past quarter century, the organisation has built a reputation for scientific excellence, innovation and stringent safety standards, ensuring that millions of South Africans have access to life-saving blood and blood products.

At the heart of this success, the SANBS says, is the continued generosity of voluntary blood donors, whose contributions have sustained the service and saved countless lives.

“Every unit of blood collected tells a story of compassion, solidarity and shared humanity,” the SANBS Chief Executive Officer Ravi Reddy said, reflecting on the values that have shaped its journey.

Reddy went on to describe the milestone as both “a proud and humbling moment,” emphasising the role of collaboration and public trust in the organisation’s success.

“Our journey has been shaped by strong partnerships, particularly with the Department of Health, and the extraordinary generosity of South Africans who continue to donate blood and save lives,” Reddy said.

While celebrating its legacy, the SANBS says it remains focused on the future, with a commitment to innovation, resilience and maintaining high standards of care.

The organisation has also used the milestone as a call to action, urging South Africans to continue donating blood to ensure a sustainable supply for patients in need.

“The anniversary is not only a celebration of past achievements, but a reaffirmation of our purpose,” Reddy added.
