South African media personality Maria McCloy dies at 50

South African media personality Maria McCloy has died at the age of 50, her family confirmed in a statement.

McCloy passed away on 12 May 2026 at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg following heart failure.

“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of our beloved sister and media industry giant, Maria McCloy,” the family said in the statement.

McCloy was widely known in South Africa’s entertainment and fashion industries for her work as a DJ, publicist and fashion designer. The family described her as a “vibrant and creative soul” who embraced life wholeheartedly and touched many lives through her kindness, warmth and generosity.

“She had a special way of bringing people together and her presence brought comfort, laughter and love to all who knew her,” the statement read.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the entertainment and media sectors, with many remembering McCloy for her contribution to South African fashion, music and pop culture.

She is survived by her mother and sisters, Thandiwe and Natasha, as well as extended family and friends.

During what they described as an “incredibly difficult and shocking time,” the family requested privacy as they mourn her passing and come to terms with their loss.

The family also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences received since the news of her death emerged.
