Johannesburg – The Gauteng Provincial Government says it is fully prepared to ensure that planned protests against illegal immigration on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, take place in a safe, peaceful and lawful manner.
Speaking during a provincial law enforcement parade at FNB Stadium on Friday, Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the provincial government, working alongside all law enforcement agencies, has put measures in place to maintain public order while protecting citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful protest.
Lesufi stressed that while the government supports the right to demonstrate, it will not tolerate violence, criminality or acts of xenophobia under the guise of legitimate protest.
“We support the right of people to protest. However, we will not tolerate those who seek to hide behind legitimate demonstrations to violate the Constitution or incite violence and xenophobia,” the Premier said.

He added that while government supports the effective implementation of South Africa’s immigration laws, this must be done within the confines of the law and with the safety of all people as the primary consideration.
As part of efforts to ensure peaceful demonstrations, the Gauteng Provincial Government has scheduled two days of engagements with protest organisers to discuss concerns surrounding illegal immigration and encourage constructive dialogue.
“We appreciate those who are willing to engage with us on these important issues. Our message is clear: let us work together to ensure that South Africa remains a safe, peaceful and united country,” Lesufi said.
The provincial government has assured residents that law enforcement agencies remain on high alert and are operationally ready to protect lives and property, maintain public order and uphold the rule of law throughout the planned protests.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to refrain from sharing misinformation or inflammatory content that could heighten tensions or create divisions within communities. Residents are encouraged to rely on official government communication platforms and credible news sources for verified information regarding migration matters and public safety.
The planned demonstrations are expected to take place across parts of South Africa on Tuesday.
