Gauteng Government arrests 938 suspects during crime crackdown in Lesedi municipality

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) says intensified integrated law enforcement and service delivery operations in Ratanda have resulted in the arrest of 938 suspects linked to a range of serious crimes.

According to the provincial government, the arrests were made during coordinated operations conducted between 13 and 14 May 2026 as part of efforts to combat crime, strengthen service delivery and improve cooperation between different spheres of government.

The suspects were arrested for offences including contact crimes, gender-based violence, kidnapping, drug-related offences and other serious crimes.

Government officials also confirmed that nine convicted criminals linked to crimes such as murder, armed robbery, housebreaking, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and shoplifting were collectively sentenced to 61 years’ imprisonment during the operation.

The operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service, metro police departments, municipal traffic law enforcement units and officials from the Department of Home Affairs.

Authorities conducted high-density crime prevention operations aimed at restoring law and order in Ratanda and surrounding communities.

As part of compliance enforcement measures, officials also inspected spaza shops, liquor outlets, general dealers and informal trading stalls. Several food and liquor establishments were shut down for failing to comply with regulations.

Beyond policing operations, integrated government teams carried out several service delivery interventions aimed at improving living conditions in the area.

These included pothole repairs, road maintenance, road markings, grass cutting, waste collection and the clearing of illegal dumping sites.

The provincial government also used the operation to advance its school safety programme through awareness campaigns and learner support activities at Kgoro ya Thuto Secondary School and Kganya Lesedi Secondary School.

The engagements focused on issues affecting learners, including substance abuse, bullying, violence, absenteeism and social discipline.

Residents were also provided with healthcare screenings, social support services, substance abuse awareness programmes and rehabilitation support through integrated community outreach initiatives.

The programme concluded with a Safety and Service Delivery Imbizo, where residents engaged directly with government leaders and officials on service delivery challenges and community concerns.

The Gauteng Provincial Government said the operation forms part of its broader strategy to build safer communities and improve access to responsive government services through coordinated intergovernmental action.
