Gautrain transformed into moving runway

Commuters aboard the Gautrain were treated to an unexpected fusion of fashion and public transport this week as the rail network partnered with celebrated South African designer David Tlale to launch an immersive Africa Month celebration.

Under the theme “I Am Africa, Not African,” Gautrain stations and train carriages were transformed into a moving runway showcasing Tlale’s Autumn/Winter 2026 collection in what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind fashion activation on South African public transport.

On 6 May 2026, models dressed in Tlale’s latest designs moved through stations and train coaches, turning ordinary commuter journeys into vibrant displays of African creativity, culture and contemporary fashion.

The activation forms part of Gautrain’s expanding Art in Transit initiative, which seeks to reposition the transport system as more than just a commuter network by using stations, buses and trains as platforms for artistic and cultural expression.

The public showcase also served as a precursor to an exclusive fashion event scheduled for 8 May 2026, where invited guests are expected to witness the official unveiling of Tlale’s Autumn/Winter 2026/27 collection aboard the Gautrain system.

Speaking about the collaboration, Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe said Africa Month provides an opportunity to celebrate identity, creativity and shared heritage across the continent.

“Through Art in Transit, we are creating spaces that reflect the energy, diversity and innovation of South Africa,” Kgobe said.

“Our partnership with David Tlale demonstrates how public spaces can become platforms for artistic excellence and cultural expression, transforming everyday journeys into memorable experiences.”

Tlale described the partnership as the realization of a long-held vision rooted in innovation, national pride and artistic excellence.

“To launch the ‘I Am Africa, Not African’ Autumn/Winter 2026 collection on the Gautrain has long been a dream rooted in a shared vision of excellence, innovation and national pride,” he said.

“This collaboration is a celebration of two brands that embody ambition and possibility.”

Tlale added that the collection aims to redefine how fashion is experienced in public spaces while highlighting South Africa’s global creative influence.
