Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is expected to deliver the eulogy at the Special Provincial Official Funeral Category Two for Pat Khulu Thwala today
The veteran, who was a decorated member of the ANC’s military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) passed away on 28 April 2026
Thwala, affectionately known as “Bra Pat,” served as a commissar and member of the military command structure. He survived the 1985 Gaborone massacre and later played a key role in underground operations, including logistical coordination and support for trained cadres involved in the liberation movement.
Following his return to South Africa in 1991, Thwala continued his activism through political and civic leadership. In 1992, he was elected chairperson of the ANC Tembisa branch and later became chairperson of the executive committee of the Khayalami Metropolitan Council after the country’s first democratic local government elections in 1995.
He also served as General Manager of the Ekurhuleni Water Care Company (ERWAT), where he was credited with strengthening water and wastewater management services in the region.
Speaking on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, Premier Lesufi thanked President Ramaphosa for honouring Thwala with an official funeral.
“Thwala gave the country distinguished service during the anti-apartheid struggle and his continued commitment to public service after the dawn of democracy needs to recognised,” Lesufi said ahead of the funeral.
Thwala is remembered by many as a committed freedom fighter, community leader and public servant whose life reflected decades of sacrifice in pursuit of justice and democratic governance in South Africa.
The funeral service is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 9 May 2026 at the Church of Jesus Christ in Vosloorus at 08:00.
