Gauteng Premier welcomes arrest of pastor over alleged murder of four-month-old baby

The arrest of a pastor allegedly linked to the murder of a four-month-old baby has prompted Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to warn that religious standing must never place anyone above the law. The Gauteng Provincial Government welcomed the arrest, describing it as an important step towards securing justice for the infant and the grieving family. Lesufi has extended his condolences to the family, describing the death of the baby as deeply disturbing and heartbreaking. “The arrest is an important step in ensuring that this tragic matter is brought before the courts and that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law,” Lesufi said. He said the criminal justice system must be allowed to take its course, expressing hope that the family would ultimately find some measure of justice. The Premier emphasised that the title or position a person holds in society should not shield them from accountability. He said religious leaders carried a profound responsibility to protect, guide and serve their communities, particularly the most vulnerable. The provincial government called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a diligent investigation and ensure that all relevant evidence is presented before the courts. It also urged the public to refrain from speculation and circulating unverified information while the legal process unfolds. Lesufi further stressed that child protection must remain a collective priority, calling on government, families, communities, religious institutions and civil society to work together to safeguard children’s safety, dignity and fundamental rights.
