Gauteng deploys drones, police and high-tech surveillance to secure Soweto Derby

The Gauteng Provincial Government is pulling out all the stops to ensure the safety of thousands of football fans expected to descend on FNB Stadium for Saturday’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

In a major security operation, the province will deploy additional law enforcement officers, surveillance drones and mobile command-and-control technology to monitor crowds, prevent criminal activity and manage traffic around the stadium.

The provincial government announced on Friday that it has mobilised extensive policing resources in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), metropolitan police departments and other law enforcement agencies ahead of the clash on 31 October 2026.

The operation will see heightened police visibility, intensified patrols, crime prevention interventions and coordinated monitoring of the Nasrec precinct and surrounding areas.

Gauteng Traffic Police and Gauteng Traffic Wardens will form part of the integrated operation, focusing on maintaining public order, controlling traffic and responding swiftly to potential security threats.

A key feature of the security plan is the deployment of drones, which will provide real-time aerial surveillance of the stadium precinct.

The drones will be used to monitor crowd movements, traffic congestion and potential security risks, allowing law enforcement officers to identify and respond to incidents more effectively.

The province will also activate its e-Policing Strategy, which integrates technology into conventional policing operations to strengthen crime prevention, detection and emergency response capabilities.

Mobile command-and-control units will support communication between officers on the ground, monitor activities and coordinate responses to incidents.

Football supporters have also been encouraged to make use of the province’s e-panic button to alert law enforcement and private security personnel in the event of an emergency.

The provincial government says the integrated security operation demonstrates its commitment to combining policing personnel, operational intelligence and advanced technology to protect members of the public during major sporting events.

Authorities have urged supporters to cooperate with law enforcement officials, obey traffic regulations, remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

The province is expected to showcase its security deployment, including drone surveillance and mobile command-and-control capabilities, during a media engagement at the Nasrec precinct at 11:00 on Saturday.

The operation forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety at major events and improve coordinated policing across Gauteng.
